The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a global environmental nonprofit “working to create a world where people and nature can thrive,” was founded in the U.S. through grassroots action in 1951. TNC has grown to become one of the most effective and wide-reaching environmental organizations in the world. Recent strategic goals included assessing and advancing prospect development and analytics. With a unique combination of both centralized and decentralized services, The Nature Conservancy was interested in optimizing its resources to develop an integrated plan for harnessing untapped potential across funding streams through more robust pipeline development and analytics and creating a sustainable structure that leverages both central and regional opportunities.

Our work with BWF is opening new pathways for prospect development and analytics. Over time, these efforts will pave the way for more targeted investments in all areas vital to realizing our ambitious fundraising goals in service of our critical mission. I am confident that our work with BWF will enable us to extend our global reach by helping us engage donors throughout their journey in more meaningful, transformational ways.

The engagement involved a SWOT analysis of the prospect development and analytics structure along with interviews with central and regional colleagues. Those interviews were designed to assess current resources and explore the optimal organizational restructure to address long-term analytics needs. The final report TNC received provided recommendations for the appropriate resourcing and structure that would allow the nonprofit to increase fundraising with a focus on major and principal gifts.

Once the bright spots “where the organization can build positive momentum and cultivate an environment that makes change possible” were identified, TNC quickly acted upon the recommendations. Thus far, TNC has implemented the recommended restructuring and made additional hires to better serve regional chapters with analytics and prospect management. TNC has also elevated analytics to the leadership level to coordinate efforts and assist with data-driven decision-making.
