History

Bentz Whaley Flessner in the Beginning

From its founding in 1983 by three  experienced professionals—Frank Bentz, John Whaley and Bruce Flessner—Bentz Whaley Flessner has grown into one of the most sophisticated global consulting firms serving the development and advancement operations at leading colleges, universities, medical centers and other major non-profit organizations.

In its very first year, Bentz Whaley Flessner provided counsel on the now-legendary Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island restoration project. BWF helped raise over $315 million, far surpassing the original $200 million goal, and Ellis Island was restored to its rightful place in America’s landscape.

During the 1990s, the firm continued to grow and develop with the addition of the specialty practices.  Bentz Whaley Flessner  became a leader in systems and operations, prospecting, annual giving and other specialty areas.  The firm continued to expand on the national landscape, and provided counsel in 45 states from  New England to Hawaii.

The new century brought more global clients in Europe, Asia,  Africa and Latin America.   Bentz Whaley Flessner also continued to expand the firm by opening a second office in Washington, DC.  With the prosperity of the new decade, the firm also provided services to several new clients who were launching billion dollar campaigns.

Bentz Whaley Flessner Today

In the second decade of the new century,  challenging economic conditions have changed the outlook of philanthropy. Bentz Whaley Flessner has become more focused on helping colleges, universities and medical centers build  stronger development programs to meet immediate and long-term goals, as well as developing strategies and best practices to succeed and transform philanthropy.
